Grilled Asparagus

grilled asparagus mobile

It’s the job of a BBQ side dish to bring a meal together so make sure it’s a good one, saying that it doesn’t have to be overly complicated. There is nothing more frustrating than spending most of your day trying to find a specific ingredient for a recipe to find it’s out of stock in shops and must be ordered in.

Ingredients

  • Asparagus
  • Kosher salt & black pepper
  • Shap knife
  • Cutting board
  • Tongs for grilling
  • Fresh squeezed lemon juice or balsamic vinegar
  • Freshly grated parmesan cheese

Method

  • Preheat your grill on high heat for 10 minutes.
  • Trim off approximately 1 to 2 inches from the root end of the asparagus, as this side can be a bit fibrous.
  • Coat the asparagus liberally with salt & pepper to prevent it from sticking to the grates.
  • Turn the grill to medium heat, place the asparagus on the grill and close the lid. Using a tongs, turn every 2 to 3 minutes to cook evenly. If possible, avoid over-charring the skins. Keeping an eye on the asparagus through the glass viewing window will allow you to do this while maintaining the temperature of the BBQ.
  • The total cooking time will vary depending on the thickness of the asparagus but it will take approximately 7 to 10 minutes.
  • They can be served as is, but these are wonderful with a drizzle of fresh lemon juice or balsamic vinegar. Finally Sprinkle a good coating of your grated parmesan all over the Asparagus. Delish!

Introducing Asparagus on your Sahara BBQ….

Something special happens when Asparagus hits your Sahara Grill. It is transformed from a rather bland vegetable to a crispy and smokey side dish. Asparagus is available all year round, but the stalks are the most tender and sweet in early spring which is perfect for right now.

To give an incredible smokey flavour, you can cook along with the Sahara Smoker box. Place this at the top corner of your BBQ and add the wood chips of your choice. This will take the asparagus to another level.

When picking your Asparagus for the grill, keep in mind that if it is too thin, they will burn quickly and most likely fall through your grill grates. Too thick and they tend to be woody and stringy. So, try go far a medium size if possible. They’re a bit easier to work with, and they provide a nice balance between the crisp outer skin and the soft interior.

Finally, here are some tips when it comes to Asparagus!

  1. Avoid buying spears that are limp, wrinkled, or have partially open tips. These are all signs that it is not fresh.
  2. Fine grit can be tucked away in asparagus tips. To get rid of it, fill a bowl with cold water and soak the asparagus for a few minutes, and then rinse off.
  3. Did you know the stalks will let you know where they naturally end? Gently bend the asparagus and You’ll be able to feel where it wants to break.
  4. Try and use your asparagus as soon as you can, but if you don’t use it straight away, a good tip is to store it standing up in a jug of water in the fridge.

So next time you are getting your groceries pop them in the trolly for your next BBQ.

This recipe won’t let you down.

Enjoy,

Andrea
