This grilled salmon is healthy, bursting with flavour and one of our favourite things to come off our BBQ. In fairness anything topped with this seasoning is amazing in my book.
Not only is this fish popular – it’s loaded with nutrients, it’s tasty, versatile and widely available.
Ingredients
- Half a salmon side (with the skin on)
- 2 tsp garlic powder
- 2 tsp onion salt
- 1 tsp pepper
- 1 tbsp smoked paprika
- 1 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- 1\2 tsp chili flakes (or maybe a little more if you like spicy food!)
Method
Combine all spices in a small bowl. Brush the salmon with vegetable or olive oil and then coat your salmon with the rub. You can apply as little or as much as you like. The remainder can always be stored in an airtight container for next time. It’s also unbelievably delicious on chicken!
Preheat the grill on high for 10-15 minutes and then turn down to a medium heat.
Place the salmon (skin-side down) on to the grill. Close the lid and leave until the skin is lightly charred. Grill for 15 to 25 mins until the flesh is opaque and separates easily with a fork. Don’t turn.
Fun fact… did you actually know that salmon is an excellent source of several B vitamins, which are needed for energy production, controlling inflammation, and protecting heart and brain health? Not only that – salmon is an excellent source of high-quality complete protein that provides all the essential amino acids our bodies require. This is why it’s one of my favourite things to cook in our house for the kids!
Some people complain about grilled fish sticking to the grill, and if you’ve never done it before, grilling fish might seem like a daunting task. It’s important to thoroughly clean your grill grates and oil them before cooking the fish. This will help prevent the skin from sticking too much on the grates.
When the salmon is cooked just enough, it will release from the grills. But if you touch it before that time, it can stick and break apart. If you are grilling salmon darns instead of a full salmon with this recipe the MAIN trick is not to turn the fish too soon!!
Another option is to wrap the fish in foil but just be aware that wrapping the fish in foil will give more of a steamed texture, which is also delicious, but you will lose that grilled effect.
