The Best Autumn Dessert

This easy BBQ Apple Crumble recipe is true comfort food with sweet, caramelized apple filling and crunchy cinnamon topping. The perfect dessert for these cooler evenings during Autumn. Total crowd pleaser and easy to do.!

My go-to Apples for Crumble

Granny Smith Apples are my personal favourite for most dessert recipes. I love their tart flavour and they hold their shape well. Other options include Honeycrisp, Gala, or Pink Lady.

Green Apples Apple Pie

What you need:

  • 5 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, sliced 1/4″ to 1/2″ thick. 
  • 2tbsp. cornstarch 
  • 2tbsp. granulated sugar  
  • 2tbsp. fresh lemon juice  
  • 1/4tsp. ground nutmeg 
  • 1tsp. x 2 ground cinnamon 
  • 140g rolled oats 
  • 155g packed light brown sugar  
  • 80g all-purpose flour  
  • 1/4tsp. kosher salt 
  • 3/4c unsalted butter, melted 

What to do:

  • Preheat your Sahara BBQ to high for 10 minutes.
  • In a medium bowl, toss apples, cornstarch, lemon juice, granulated sugar, nutmeg, and 1 tsp cinnamon.
  • In a separate a bowl, add in the oats, brown sugar, flour, salt, and remaining 1 tsp of cinnamon. Add butter and stir until a crumbly mixture form resembling wet sand. 
  • Arrange apple mixture in Skillett/baking dish and then top with oat mixture.
  • Set your BBQ for indirect heat by turning of the centre grill and placing your dish over the grill switched off and then turn the remaining grills to medium heat. 
  • Bake until apples are soft, topping is crisp and golden brown, and juices are bubbling around edges of dish. This Pie is best served warm with ice cream or cream. 

Some simple tips to make this easy apple crumble:

  • Cut equal-sized pieces. Slice the apples into bite-sized pieces about 1/2-1/4″ thick. You want the pieces to be uniform in size so that they all cook evenly. 
  • Don’t overmix the crumble. Mix the butter and other ingredients lightly until it starts to form clumps. If you overmix everything, you will have a paste that won’t crisp up while baking. 
  • Keep crumble topping cold.  For extra crunch, make the crumble topping first and keep it in the fridge while you prepare the apples then sprinkle over the apples just before baking. 
  • Be one Step ahead.. If you want to be one step ahead you can make this ahead of time. Just assemble, cover with foil, and refrigerate until ready to bake (up to 24 hours).
